4 Good Reasons To Pursue A Career In Corporate Law

Law Blog

If you have a business-savvy mindset and are looking for a way to increase your earnings, you may want to pursue a career as a corporate lawyer. After three years of law school, you can put your existing business knowledge and new legal knowledge to work, defending corporations against various legal accusations. But why should you choose corporate law over so many other options available? Here are six reasons.

1. There are diverse career opportunities.

Many branches of law are very specific. For instance, if you become a family attorney, you will handle mostly divorce and custody cases. But in corporate law, the cases you get will be as diverse as the corporations in the U.S. You may work for a toothpaste company one week and a dog food company the next. You'll learn interesting things about so many industries, making corporate law a smart choice for anyone who is easily bored.

2. You can help others.

Some fields of law can be a bit depressing. For instance, as a criminal defense attorney, you may be employed to help defend someone who has committed a crime -- even though you know they are guilty or hurting someone. In corporate law, much of your work will center around making sure businesses are using the correct terminology in their documents, taking the right measures against crime, and so forth. You will be able to see the good you do for people and their companies.

3. You'll earn a good income.

Working in non-profit law, as a public defender, or as a district attorney all have their merits, but none of these are high-paying legal professions. With the same amount of schooling, you can earn a lot more as a corporate lawyer. You'll also earn more on the legal side of things that you would earn in other positions for the same business. Law school is not usually cheap, so a high salary will really help you pay off those loans.

4. You'll probably get to travel.

Many corporations in the United States either have foreign departments. Or, you may find foreign corporations with branches in the U.S. In either case, working as an attorney for these corporations will probably grant you the chance to travel internationally. Imagine all of the different places and cultures you can experience, and all while being paid to travel for work. Even if you do not get to travel internationally, you can pretty much count on trips within the country.
